You could use the book to learn to take specific shots such as deserts, wildlife (and much more), or learn about how to prepare for a trip, equipment you may need, as well as how to plan to ensure you benefit most from your travels.
The book is divided up well, with the first few chapters explaining the euqipment you would need, planning advice, safety, tips and other things. The book then goes onto explain the technical side of things, such as exposure, metering, flash, focusing etc. The book is very detailed with the technical stuff so can probably help both a beginner and more advanced photographer. At my time of reading the book, I would say I understood the basics but needed to learn more to improve what I already knew.
After the technical section, the book explains how to take pictures of specific things and the settings/techniques you would use for these shots such as portraits, cities, wildlife, landscape etc. There are many things in this section and I think if you read it all you would naturally understand the settings needed for most shots (non studio).
The final sections of the book help you learn about the post production side of things, such as backing up your work, editing, retouching and then how to make a profession out of being a photographer.
I think this is a great book, full of useful information on how to become a better travel photographer. I found it a bit harder to read than the Lonely Planet guide (my review here), but still an excellent book to add to your collection, especially if you already know the basics.
